Is My Phone Too Old? How to Know When It's Time to Upgrade

Not sure if your phone is past its best or just needs a bit of help? Here's how to tell the difference—and what to do either way.

It’s a question I hear all the time: “Is my phone too old, or can it still be fixed?”

The honest answer is—it depends. Some phones that seem beyond hope just need a clean-up or a settings reset. Others have genuinely reached the end of their useful life and no amount of tweaking will make them pleasant to use again.

Here’s how to tell the difference.

Signs Your Phone Is Struggling (But Probably Fixable)

It’s slow or freezing. This is the most common complaint, and it’s often fixable. A phone that’s slow is usually short on storage or memory. Deleting unused apps, clearing cached data, and turning off background refresh can make a big difference without spending a penny.

The battery doesn’t last. Batteries degrade over time—that’s normal. But if your battery is draining faster than it used to, it doesn’t always mean you need a new phone. On iPhones, you can check your battery health directly in Settings. If it’s above 80%, the battery is still performing reasonably well.

You’re running out of storage. “No storage left” messages are frustrating, but storage problems are almost always solvable. Moving photos to cloud storage or an external drive, and deleting apps you never use, usually frees up plenty of space.

Apps keep crashing. This is often caused by an app update that didn’t install properly, or an old version of the app that needs updating. Deleting and reinstalling the problem app usually sorts it.

Signs It Might Be Time for a New Phone

It no longer receives security updates. This is the most important one. Apple supports iPhones for around 5–6 years. Android varies widely by manufacturer, but most phones stop receiving updates after 3–4 years. Without security updates, your phone becomes increasingly vulnerable to threats—and this is a genuine reason to consider replacing it.

To check on iPhone: go to Settings → General → Software Update. If your phone is up to date but the iOS version is several versions behind the latest, it’s likely no longer supported.

It’s genuinely very slow, even after a clean-up. If you’ve tried all the fixes and the phone is still painfully slow for everyday tasks—sending a text, opening an app—then the hardware may simply not be up to the job any more.

The screen is cracked or the charging port is broken. Repairs are possible, but they can be expensive. If the repair cost is more than half the price of a decent second-hand replacement, it’s worth reconsidering.
