Why laptops slow down—and how I fix them
Most laptop problems are more straightforward than they seem. A slow laptop is often just a full hard drive or too many programmes running in the background—things that can be fixed in an hour or two without replacing anything.
When I visit your home in Falkirk, I’ll check the basics first: how much storage is left, what’s running in the background, whether Windows or macOS is up to date, and whether anything unexpected has crept onto the machine. In most cases the cause is clear within a few minutes.
The most common issues I find:
- Start-up programmes—many laptops have dozens of programmes set to launch automatically when switched on, most of which are never used. Disabling them can cut start-up time dramatically.
- A full hard drive—Windows and macOS need free space to operate properly. When a drive fills up, performance suffers. I’ll help free up space and advise on external storage if needed.
- Outdated software—an operating system that’s years out of date can be slow and a security risk. I’ll make sure everything is properly updated.
- Viruses or malware—malicious software running in the background can bring even a capable laptop to its knees. I’ll scan thoroughly and remove anything that shouldn’t be there.
Is it worth fixing or should I replace it?
I’ll always give you an honest answer. A laptop less than five or six years old is almost always worth a proper service. Older machines are more of a judgement call—sometimes a clean-up makes a significant difference; other times the hardware is genuinely the bottleneck and a replacement makes more financial sense.
If a replacement is the right call, I’ll tell you so before charging for a service that won’t help. And if you do decide to get a new laptop, I can help you set it up and transfer everything across from the old one.
Windows and Mac both covered
I’m comfortable working with both Windows laptops and PCs, and Apple Macs and MacBooks. Whether you’re running Windows 11, Windows 10, or the latest version of macOS—I can help.
I cover laptop and computer help across all of Falkirk and Central Scotland, including Grangemouth, Larbert, Stirling, Alloa, and Cumbernauld.

I'll always give you an honest answer. Sometimes a clean-up makes a huge difference; other times it makes more sense to look at a new laptop. I'll advise you fairly, not just to get more work.
